Colegio Champagnat (El Salvador): 100 years of shaping hearts and minds, looking beyond

In the heart of Santa Tecla, the Colegio Champagnat proudly celebrates its centenary, marking a century of commitment to comprehensive education and Marist values. Founded in 1925 by the Marist Brothers, this institution has been a beacon of hope, educating young people with an education that transcends the classroom, fostering academic excellence, faith and service to others.

Throughout this century, generations of students have passed through its classrooms, imbued with the Marist charism of Saint Marcellin Champagnat: an education in which knowledge and values go hand in hand, transforming lives through simplicity, love of work and solidarity.

Since its foundation in 1925, the Colegio Champagnat (El Salvador) has been a benchmark for Marist education in El Salvador. What began with a small group of students in Santa Tecla has grown into an institution committed to comprehensive education, combining academic excellence with Gospel values.

In 1970, the school moved to its current location next to the Cafetalón, marking a new stage of growth and consolidation. The blessing of the building by Monsignor Óscar Romero symbolised the institution’s commitment to education at the service of the community. In 1993, with the inclusion of girls, the school reaffirmed its vocation to be a space for equitable and inclusive education.

Throughout these 100 years, the Colegio Champagnat has adopted a humanist and constructivist approach, based on the Marist pedagogy of presence and closeness to the students. Its educational model fosters the development of young people who are critical, supportive and committed to social transformation, inspired by the values of Saint Marcellin Champagnat: simplicity, love of work, family spirit and social justice.

This centenary coincides with the Jubilee 2025 of the Catholic Church, a time of spiritual renewal under the slogan ‘Pilgrims of Hope’. As Marists, we take up this call with joy, renewing our mission to educate from the heart and looking beyond the challenges of the present.

Part of a global network present in more than 80 countries, the Colegio Champagnat continues to educate young people with a spirit of service and a deep faith, called to be agents of change in society. Today, as we celebrate 100 years of history, we reaffirm our commitment to the future, with the certainty that education continues to be the way to transform the world.
