Champagnat Global Network is connecting Greece to South Africa

Finding about Nelson Mandela and his country

Our students of 6th grade of elementary School “Saint Chrisostomos of Smyrni”,  Leonteios Marist School of Nea Smyrni (Athens – Greece) had the great opportunity of meeting online Dr. Mark Bussin, Co-ordinator of 6 Marist Schools in South Africa, who lives in Johannesburg and had met Nelson Mandela in person. Answering their questions he described Nelson Mandela’s fight against racial discrimination and the life of black people in his country both during Apartheid and today. He told them about the 2 entrances of Apartheid museum, the children protest in the streets of Soweto in the 70’s and admitted that if Nelson Mandela was still alive, he wouldn’t feel happy enough about black people’s living standards.

Dr. Mark Bussin also told our students about special things, sights and activities that one can experience only in South Africa.

At the end of the class, teacher Despoina Tsaousi from Greece said: “Mark, thank you for your interesting information about Nelson Mandela and your country. This was just the beginning. And Mark Bussin from South Africa commented: “It was really great and fun! The children learned in a way they will never forget.”

This interesting conversation ended with the promise of a next connection between students of Marist schools of Greece and Johannesburg. We are looking forward to!
